AI vs Human: Who Writes Better PRDs?

The question sounds provocative, but it's one product teams are actually asking as AI tools become embedded in PM workflows. Who — or what — writes better PRDs?

The honest answer: it depends entirely on what you mean by "better." AI and human PRD writers each have strengths that the other lacks. Understanding the split is more useful than picking a winner.

What Makes a PRD "Good"?

Before comparing, it's worth being precise. A PRD is good if it achieves its purpose: aligning a product team around what to build, why, and how to know when it's done. That means:

  • Completeness — covers the relevant cases, edge cases, and constraints
  • Accuracy — reflects actual customer needs, not assumed ones
  • Clarity — can be read once and understood without a follow-up meeting
  • Traceability — connects requirements back to evidence
  • Judgement — reflects real trade-off decisions, not everything-is-P1 thinking

Where AI Wins

Completeness

AI is relentlessly thorough. Give it a problem and it will generate requirements for the happy path, the error state, the empty state, the loading state, the permission edge cases, and the mobile-vs-desktop differences. It doesn't get bored. It doesn't cut corners because it's running late.

Human PMs, even good ones, miss things. Especially under time pressure. The requirements you forget to write are the ones that become engineering surprises two weeks before launch.

Structural consistency

AI PRDs follow the same structure every time. The sections are in the right order. The user stories follow the same format. The acceptance criteria look like acceptance criteria rather than a mix of bullet points and paragraphs that accumulated over three editing sessions.

Consistency matters when multiple people are writing PRDs. A team of ten PMs produces ten different styles of document unless someone actively enforces a standard. AI enforces it automatically.

Speed of first draft

A medium-complexity feature PRD that takes a human 4–6 hours to write takes an AI 90 seconds to generate. Even accounting for editing time, the overall cycle is dramatically shorter.

Coverage of common patterns

Accuracy grounded in real evidence

AI invents customer needs. Without access to your specific research, it fills gaps with plausible-sounding requirements based on what products like yours usually need. Some of those guesses will be right. Some will be subtly wrong in ways that cause real problems — like optimising for a use case your customers don't actually have.

Human PMs who've done the research write from evidence. Every requirement has a mental link back to a customer conversation or a pattern in the data. That doesn't always make it into the doc, but it informs the judgment.

Strategic judgment

A PRD isn't just a list of what could be built — it's a document of what's worth building right now. That requires knowing your company's strategy, your team's constraints, your competitors' moves, and your customers' urgency hierarchy.

AI has none of this context unless you explicitly provide it. Even then, it can't weigh trade-offs the way someone who sits in your planning meetings can.

What to leave out

Good PRDs are as much about what they don't specify as what they do. Choosing the right level of abstraction — detailed enough to guide engineering, loose enough to allow implementation decisions — requires judgment that AI hasn't mastered.

AI tends toward completeness at the expense of focus. It will specify constraints on optional features that don't need specifying yet. It will add "nice to have" requirements that should stay off the doc until someone commits to building them.

Novel problems

When you're building something genuinely new — a problem type that hasn't been solved at scale before, a user segment with unusual needs — AI's pattern library works against it. It defaults to familiar solutions for familiar problems. The requirement to think differently about an unfamiliar domain is the one it handles worst.

The Best Workflow Isn't AI vs Human — It's Both

The framing of "AI vs human" assumes you're choosing. You're not.

The best PRD workflow in 2026 is:

If AI handles first drafts and completeness checking, the skills that remain uniquely valuable are:

  • Conducting good user research
  • Making strategic trade-off calls
  • Knowing what to leave out
  • Writing clear metrics tied to business outcomes

These aren't going away. If anything, they become more important as the mechanical parts of spec writing get automated. The bottleneck shifts from "can we write the doc" to "do we have the right evidence and judgment to write the doc well."


AI writes faster and more completely. Humans write more accurately and with better judgment. Use both.
