How Semantic Search Changes Product Discovery

Product discovery has always had a retrieval problem. You know a relevant piece of user research exists somewhere, but you can't remember exactly what it said or which file it's in. You know there's a backlog item about this customer complaint, but it was written six months ago by a different PM with different terminology. You search, you don't find it, and you write the insight or the requirement from scratch — duplicating work and losing institutional knowledge.

Semantic search changes this. Instead of matching keywords, it matches meaning. A search for "users frustrated with navigation" returns results about users who "can't find the settings page," who "keep clicking the wrong thing," and who described "getting lost in the interface" — even if none of those exact words appeared in the query.

For product teams, this is infrastructure that makes discovery work more reliable and more connected.

What Semantic Search Is

Traditional keyword search is exact matching. Search for "export" and you find documents that contain the word "export." Search for "download" and you miss documents that only say "export."

Semantic search converts text into mathematical representations (embeddings) that capture meaning. Documents with similar meanings cluster together in this vector space, regardless of exact word choice. "Download my data," "get my files out," "extract the report," and "export functionality" are all nearby in semantic space — a search for any of them returns results related to all of them.

This matters enormously for qualitative research, where the same problem gets described in dozens of different ways by different users, and where the PMs who wrote up the findings used their own vocabulary that may not match the words you're searching with now.

Where Semantic Search Transforms Product Work

Research repository retrieval

The most immediate application is finding relevant past research. Before you write a PRD, you should be searching for what you already know. With keyword search, this is unreliable — you only find things if your search term matches the vocabulary of the person who wrote the notes. With semantic search, you find things because they're about the same topic.

"What do we know about the onboarding experience?" returns interview clips about "first-time setup," "getting started," "initial configuration," and "the first session" — all semantically related, none necessarily containing the word "onboarding."

Backlog deduplication

Large backlogs accumulate duplicate items described in different language. "Allow bulk deletion of items" and "multi-select and delete" and "select all and remove" are the same feature request, but a keyword search for "bulk delete" misses the second and third.

Semantic search over your backlog surfaces near-duplicates automatically. Before creating a new backlog item, a semantic similarity check against existing items prevents the same problem being specified multiple times in incompatible ways.

Support ticket analysis

Support tickets describe problems in customer language, which rarely matches the language engineers and PMs use internally. A search for "authentication failure" might miss tickets where customers said "can't log in," "my password doesn't work," and "keeps kicking me out."

Semantic search over support tickets lets you find all the tickets related to a problem regardless of how customers described it. This produces more accurate frequency counts and surfaces the full range of customer language, which is useful for writing user-facing error messages and documentation.

Feature request clustering

Unstructured feature requests — from support tickets, NPS surveys, sales calls, user interviews — cover the same underlying need in dozens of ways. Semantic clustering groups these automatically: all the requests about "better reporting" cluster together even if they say "export to Excel," "PDF download," "printable view," "dashboard sharing," and "send reports to stakeholders."

The cluster tells you the underlying need is strong (many variations) without requiring manual deduplication.

PRD evidence retrieval

When a PRD is being written, semantic search over the research corpus can surface relevant evidence automatically. Writing a requirement about search behaviour? The system retrieves quotes from user interviews where search came up — even if those interviews used different language than the requirement does.

Implementing Semantic Search for Your Team

You don't need to build infrastructure from scratch. Several practical approaches exist:

The Limitations

Semantic ≠ accurate — Semantic similarity doesn't guarantee relevance. A result that's semantically near your query may be about a similar topic but from a user segment or time period that doesn't apply to your current question. Always review results for fit, not just semantic proximity.

Quality of embeddings varies — Not all semantic search implementations are equal. The underlying model determines how well "meaning" is captured. Domain-specific language (especially B2B technical terminology) is sometimes poorly handled by general-purpose embedding models.

Doesn't solve data quality — Semantic search retrieves what's in your corpus. If your research notes are shallow, your interviews were poorly structured, or your backlog items have no description — semantic search over bad data produces bad results, just faster.

Hallucination risk in AI retrieval — Some AI research tools claim to retrieve relevant evidence but are actually generating plausible-sounding evidence. Verify that tools you use actually cite specific source documents. If a tool can't show you the original source for a retrieved quote, treat the output with scepticism.

What This Means for Product Discovery Habits

Semantic search is most valuable when you have a rich corpus of well-documented research. This means:

  • Document your interviews in enough detail that the ideas are expressible as text
  • Write up findings as complete sentences rather than bullet point fragments
  • Backlog item descriptions should be detailed enough to be semantically distinct from each other
  • Customer quotes should be exact (or close to exact) rather than paraphrased summaries

If your research documentation is thin, semantic search over it will be marginally better than keyword search. If it's rich, semantic search becomes dramatically better than keyword search — and each piece of research you add makes the whole corpus more valuable.


Semantic search is infrastructure that compounds. The return is small when the corpus is small and grows as you document more. Teams that build good research documentation habits now are the ones that get the most from semantic retrieval later.
